2022 Annual Membership Meeting
Our Voting Rights, Our Democracy.
Highlights from the June 29, 2022 Annual Membership Meeting at the Atlanta History Center
Our annual meeting this year included the introduction of new board members, the celebration of victories for voting rights, free speech, and racial equity, and “A Conversation: Talking about Race in the South” with Drew Westen and Andrea Young. Awards were given to this year’s advocates for civil liberties.
The 2022 Honorees
Lisa Haddad was honored for her dedication as a public advocate for reproductive health and freedom in Georgia. Dr. Haddad was an outspoken critic of Georgia’s 6-week abortion ban and was among medical professionals in the state who played a critical role in educating the public and lawmakers around the impact of such a law. She became a plaintiff in the ACLU of Georgia’s lawsuit, Sister Song v. Kemp, and spoke regularly to the press about the immediate harm of such a law on Georgia’s women, especially women of color.
Jay Myers was honored for his service and dedication to democracy as a deputy registrar in the November General Election and again in the Senate Runoff. He was among hundreds of attorneys the ACLU of Georgia trained and placed in polling locations during elections to ensure that voting ran smoothly. Jay and his wife Kay are important donors in our fight for voter rights and civil liberties in Georgia.
Bridgett Ortega, a retiring board member, was honored for more than 10 years of service. Her work helped the ACLU of Georgia evolve from a much smaller organization with a mission focused on litigation to an invaluable leader integrating legal work with legislative advocacy, community engagement, voter education, and communications. As equity officer she helped the ACLU of Georgia integrate equity, diversion, inclusion, and belonging into all aspects its work, including the makeup of the staff and board of directors.
