Sep. 14—The Cobb County Board of Elections will reconsider its July decision to move a polling place from Cooper Middle School to the Cobb County Police Academy after receiving messages opposing the move from concerned citizens and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Opponents argue that using the police academy, located at 2435 East-West Connector in south Cobb, would create an intimidating environment for voters of color who may be distrustful of police. Of the approximately 5,200 voters registered in the precinct, 58.2% are Black.
"As a black male living in this county, seeing all the voter suppression issues around the country that to me is a sign of intimidation," Cobb resident Baron Doss told the board on Monday.

On September 13, 2021, the ACLU of Georgia sent a letter to the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration urging it to reverse its decision to move a polling location from Cooper Middle School to the Cobb County Police Academy. At the board's meeting that afternoon, Rahul Garabadu, ACLU of Georgia's voting right attorney, testified.
In a 4-1 vote, the board decided to revisit its decision to move the polling location. The board will do so at its meeting in October 2021.
