Letter to Jeff Davis County Board of Elections to Reopen a Polling Location in a Predominantly Black Precinct

On May 21, 2019, the ACLU of Georgia sent a letter asking the Jeff Davis County Board of Elections to reopen a polling location in the Hazlehurst Precinct, a predominantly black precinct.

Specifically, the ACLU of Georgia asked that the board work with the community to develop a polling place plan that can be approved as soon as possible before the November 2019 local elections, preferably by the next Board of Elections meeting.

Aklima Khondoker, ACLU of Georgia staff attorney, worked with public officials, community leaders, and voters to convince the board to reopen the Hazlehurst Precinct.  On August 20, 2019, the board voted 2-1 to reopen the Hazlehurst precinct.
