WHY
The Cobb County Sheriff's department's culture of negligence has resulted in more than 40 deaths of people incarcerated in the Cobb County Detention Center under Sherriff Warren’s administration. Additional allegations include the detention center failing to provide clean water, instituting a month-long lockdown, failing to permit visitation with family, delaying access to mail, preventing personal phone calls with loved ones, and banning the delivery of the Marietta Daily Journal.

Civil rights and civil liberties, like immigration rights and criminal justice reform, are under attack, and that’s why we decided to get involved in this election,” said Christopher Bruce, political director of the ACLU of Georgia. “At a time when the Cobb County Detention Center is in crisis and families are being split apart by law enforcement, the next Cobb County sheriff has the ability to change this. We’re reaching out to voters across the county to ensure they know each candidates’ positions on these important issues.”
The ACLU of Georgia has been working with coalition partners on the ground to pressure the county district attorney and other agencies to investigate the more than 40 deaths that have occurred under the tenure of the current sheriff. The affiliate is conducting a robust campaign to contact county voters to provide information regarding candidates for sheriff and local state legislative races via mail, phone banking, texts, email, and social media.
