“The right to vote is one of the most sacred civil liberties we have as citizens. We believe voting should be easy for every citizen and that each vote should count the same,” said Christopher Bruce, political director, ACLU of Georgia. “We seek to ensure that the new maps ensure that all voters of color have the same opportunities as white voters to elect their candidates of choice regardless of where they live in the state and regardless of who they vote for.”
In the last 10 years, the Greater Athens area, made up of Clarke, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties, has grown in population and grown more diverse. The voting age population has increased by over 9% alone.
Looking at demographic growth in the area, the Asian voting age population and the white voting age populations have both grown by nearly 6%. The Hispanic voting age population has grown by almost 16%. The Black voting age population has grown by almost 19%. Overall, the people of color voting age population in the Greater Athens area has grown by just under 18%.
