ATLANTA – Today, the ACLU of Georgia sent a letter asking the Jeff Davis County Board of Elections to reopen a polling location in the Hazlehurst Precinct, a predominantly black precinct.
Specifically, the ACLU of Georgia asked that the board work with the community to develop a polling place plan that can be approved as soon as possible before the November 2019 local elections, preferably by the next Board of Elections meeting.
“We look forward to working with the county board of elections to ensure that community members who reside inside the Hazlehurst precinct are able to exercise their sacred, constitutional right to vote,” stated Sean J. Young, Legal Director of the ACLU of Georgia.
Aklima Khondoker, Staff Attorney of the ACLU of Georgia, will attend the elections board meeting on Wednesday morning.
The Jeff Davis County Board of Elections is meeting on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at 11am, at the County Court House.
