MARIETTA— The ACLU of Georgia commends the Cobb County Board of Elections & Registration for its vote to dismiss 1,350 voter challenges filed in the last month. The board voted 4-1 to dismiss the challenges today. This action keeps voters on the rolls and frees elections workers to prepare for voters to cast their ballots in the November election.
Last week, the ACLU of Georgia sent a letter to the Board, urging it to comply with state and federal law and dismiss the last-minute attempt by third-party groups to disenfranchise voters with unsubstantiated challenges.
“We commend the Board for following the law and keeping voters on the rolls in the run-up to the November election,” said Caitlin May, ACLU of Georgia voting rights attorney. “The ACLU of Georgia encourages all counties to take note of this decision, and urges counties to dismiss mass, non-individualized challenges quickly so that election workers can focus on their important job."
The Cobb County dismissal comes nearly a week after Gwinnett took similar action on eleventh-hour attempt to challenge thousands of voters. The ACLU of Georgia will continue to actively monitor and challenge these unlawful actions in order to protect the right to vote for all eligible Georgians.
